2000 Fall Foliage Excursions

During the 2nd and 4th weekends of October the 142 returned to the Southern Division to power the NYS&W T&HS sponsored Fall Foliage excursions from Susquehanna Transfer to Bairds Farm in Warwick New York. Except for running behind schedule the trips ran very well during the first weekend. The only mechanical difficulty was the 2nd weekend, when a bearing in the 142's trailing truck overheated and froze on  Sparta Mountain during the Saturday trip. The 142 was set off at Sparta Junction and was replaced by a diesel. A dedicated volunteer immediately drove to Binghamton NY to get a replacement bearing, and a crew began work on the 142. The Mikado was fixed around 10pm but a lack of crew kept the 142 from being moved until Sunday morning where it met the WSPX in Butler with the 3614 leading. In typical fashion, the unfortunate crew met with another setback when filling the tender, the fire hydrants valve was stuck open, and the water overflowed from the tender for several minutes. The Butler DPW got the water turned off, the 3614 was moved to a siding, the 142 coupled to the head end and pulled West and the 3614 coupled up to the 2400's. With all the locomotives set, the train was again headed West and no further trouble plagued the trip.
Below are a few scenes from the trips and more may be added soon.
